Welcome to Sped and Sunshine! My name is Lindsay. I am 25 years old from Sumerduck, VA (yes- it is a real place and "Sumerduck" is only spelled with one "m"). I am currently a graduate student pursuing a Master's Degree in Special Education and teaching a classroom for students with disabilities.
I graduated from Bridgewater College in 2011 with my Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with an Elementary Education Certification. After graduating (and student teaching), I took a break from the education world and began working at a small independent insurance company. A short time after graduation and declaring "I will never be a teacher! It's too hard!", I felt that pull on my heart strings that I just had to get back into the classroom. The "pull" began as a spec, which led to a poke, and worked it's way up to a pull or tug. I finally began subbing and fell in love with an intellectual disabilities classroom I spent time in. It was like the heaven's opened and a light bulb went off. I had found my role in education! General education classrooms I spent time in just didn't feel "right". Something was missing.
I began graduate school at the University of Mary Washington in the Fall of 2013, and here I am! Just beginning my journey on this roller coaster. I know my future career in Special Education is not going to be rainbows and butterflies but I know that this is what my heart is being led to do. I also know I already have a lot of support in my family, friends, professors, other professionals, strangers, the lady at Chik-fil-A, etc. Needless to say, I try to find inspiration and support in everyone and everything I can.
May sunbeams find you.
