About Me!

Welcome to Sped and Sunshine! My name is Lindsay. I am a Special Education Teacher for students with Intellectual Disabilities in rural Virginia. I have been teaching since 2014 and could not imagine doing anything else. This is my calling. Though every day isn't rainbows and unicorns there is no place I would rather be.

I graduated from Bridgewater College in 2011 with my Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with an Elementary Education Certification. After graduating (and student teaching), I took a break from the education world and began working at a small independent insurance company. A short time after graduation and declaring "I will never be a teacher! It's too hard!", I felt that pull on my heart strings that I just had to get back into the classroom. The "pull" began as a spec, which led to a poke, and worked it's way up to a pull or tug.  I finally began subbing and fell in love with an intellectual disabilities classroom I spent time in. It was like the heaven's opened and a light bulb went off. I had found my role in education! General education classrooms I spent time in just didn't feel "right". Something was missing.

I started teaching in 2014 at an alternative day school for students with disabilities. I gained a lot of experience there! I also worked with some of the greatest people, and, most importantly, realized that middle schoolers were not my niche. In 2015 I started working in an ID (Intellectual Disabilities) Moderate elementary classroom and I've been here ever since! My mom has a sign hanging over the entryway to our kitchen, "We may not have it all together, but together we have it all". That's how my classroom runs. Every day is a new adventure, most things do not go to plan, progress is hit or miss, but every day has a purpose and I am loving the journey!

May sunbeams find you.

Lindsay
